Las diferencias entre Product Owner y Product Manager
Si te encuentras en el trabajo y van a designar roles de Product Manager y Product Owner, al menos una persona preguntará en qué se diferencian. Incluso, algunas personas te dirán que es lo mismo, con la diferencia que uno está enfocado en Scrum.
En muchas empresas es común que el Product Manager sea el Product Owner, pese a que tienen funciones distintas. Por ello, hoy te traigo las diferencias entre estos 2 roles, para que sepas identificar las tareas que deben realizar las personas encargadas de este puesto en tu empresa.
¿Qué es Product Owner y Product Manager?
El Product Owner es el profesional encargado de optimizar el valor del producto desarrollado por una empresa. responsable del producto final, siendo uno de los actores esenciales de la metodología Scrum,
El Product Manager es un gerente de proyecto encargado de definir la estrategia de producto, así como de supervisar su proceso creativo y lanzamiento.
¿En qué se diferencian?
1. Responsabilidades en el equipo
El Product Owner no controla el producto, en su lugar son los encargados de maximizar el valor del producto para crear stories para el equipo de desarrollo por medio de los comentarios de sus clientes, ya que forman parte del equipo de Scrum. Están enfocados al detalle, y su enfoque es de corto a mediano plazo.
Mientras que el Product Manager se encarga más del lado organizacional, supervisando el proceso de gestión del producto en cada etapa, comprendiendo e interpretando los comentarios de los clientes para mejorar la experiencia que tienen con el producto. Su enfoque es estratégico y a largo plazo.
2. Responsabilidades
Los Product Owner son responsables de la optimización del proceso de desarrollo y abogan por las necesidades de los clientes, por ello deben ser empáticos.
Los Product Manager son responsables de supervisar el producto y descubrir nuevos clientes, por lo que tienen contacto directo con los usuarios y deben ser capaces de oír sus problemas, realizar investigaciones y empatizar con ellos.
3. Métricas de éxito
Para medir su éxito en un proyecto, el Product Owner utiliza stories completadas y métricas relacionadas al desempeño del equipo de desarrollo, para dejarlo claro en la hoja de ruta.
Por otro lado, el Product Manager es el encargado de la planificación e iteración del producto, y para medir sus resultados utilizan reportes de conversiones, tasa de abandono e ingresos del producto.
¿Por qué es importante diferenciarlos?
1. Asignar bien las tareas
Si no sabes realmente las diferencias entre el Product Owner y el Product Manager, puedes asignar tareas a la persona equivocada.
Por ejemplo, si le pides a tu Producto Manager que cree historias para los clientes, probablemente no lo haga siguiendo la metodología Scrum ni sepa cómo optimizar los productos. Para evitar un momento incómodo como este, debes tener claro qué actividades realiza cada colaborador.
2. Mejor colaboración
Que todo tu equipo tenga claro cuál es el objetivo del producto no es sencillo, sin embargo, no es imposible.
Para hacerlo realidad, deben trabajar en conjunto para identificar e interpretar los hallazgos y estrategias del producto en el que se encuentran trabajando. Pero esto no será posible si solo una persona se encarga de todo el proceso, para lograrlo se necesita del Product Owner y Producto Manager, para mejorar el trabajo en equipo y seguir el proceso en la hoja de ruta.
3. Alcanzar los objetivos
Para que el producto sea todo un éxito, deben trabajar los 2 roles, y para que ello sea posible cada persona del equipo debe tener clara cuáles son sus funciones, y así asignar tareas de forma rápida, para que el equipo trabaje de manera ágil.
Es importante, a su vez, que se programen reuniones durante la semana para revisar la estrategia, discutir problemas, resolver conflictos y tener claro los pasos a seguir, para así darle una buena experiencia de producto a los clientes.

El Producto Owner y Product Manager tienen un mismo objetivo: crear un producto que resuelva las necesidades de los clientes por medio de una gran experiencia. Para lograrlo, se debe tener bien claro los roles que desempeña cada uno, y asegurarse de que cada miembro del equipo entienda su importancia.
Además, recuerda que pese a que son roles distintos, pueden trabajar juntos para tener el resultado esperado.
